Introduction to Second Life
Second Life (SL) is an interactive, immersive 3-D virtual world provides new ways to create, communicate, interact, socialize, network, collaborate and new ways to teach and learn.
System requirements
- Make sure your computer can run Second Life in the first place.
- You need a broadband networked connection.
- Find out the system requirements @ http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php
- Take note of the types of graphics display cards supported.
- Upgrade the driver for your graphics display card if required.
Create a free, basic SL account
- Sign up for a free basic account @ https://secure-web11.secondlife.com/join/
- You are asked to select and join a community or skip the step of joining one .
- Select your last name from the drop-down menu.
- Type your first name.
- Check the availability of your name.
- Fill in your birthdate.
- Enter your active email address.
- Select your avatar, a female or a male of the style you prefer. You can change the look later on.
WORK
- Entrepreneurs (e.g. real-estate, financial brokers), skilled (e.g. builder, texturer, scripter, fashion designer, teachers) and unskilled workers (e.g. dancer, model).
- Looking for jobs while in-world – look under the Classifieds in Search.

LEARN
-Use Search – Events – Education.
- Harvard is among some 80 academic institutions exploring Second Life.
- Second Life has recently emerged as one of the cutting-edge virtual classrooms for major colleges and universities, including the Open University.
PLAY
- Visit shopping malls, nightclubs, sports arenas, casinos.
- Adventure in castles, dungeons, and cities in the sky.
- Party endlessly at nightclubs, fashion shows, art openings, fancy dress balls.
- Fall in love, get married at a virtual service—and officially designate your Second Life partner.
- Jump into multiplayer and solo play in dozens of in-world games made by gamers, for gamers.
